First and foremost, Somerset County Habitat for Humanity does not give away finished homes. We give a “Hand up not a handout” to those who cannot qualify for a bank loan. Our prospective homeowners must have ‘sweat equity’ in helping us to build or renovate the home. However, no construction experience is required. Upon completion of the work on the home, a NO INTEREST 20 to 25 year mortgage agreement for the land, materials and sub-contractor costs must be entered into. Monthly mortgage costs, which include real estate taxes and homeowners insurance, may vary from $300 to $500 depending on type of construction and the size of the home.
